Everything in Eric’s life seems to be shrinking. His trousers are getting tighter, he’s being moved to a flat with no garden, and he’s had to get a smaller TV. Even Kit Kats have been re-sized.

The only thing that’s getting bigger is his granddaughter, Smidge, with her life full of things he barely understands: technology, kick-boxing and Minecraft.

Then one night, everything changes for Smidge, and a trip to the library expands Eric’s universe into a whole new dimension. Playwright Bridget Foreman has written Surprise Ending which will be performed by York-based Riding Lights Theatre Company in all of our libraries and at surprise locations all over the city. Surprise Ending is a fun, light-hearted short play which will make you think about reading in a completely different way.

Faith In The Questions – in York

Leading scientists are heading to church to debate the relationship between science and faith.

Professor Tom McLeish and Professor Stephen Smye, along with other stellar scientists, will be engaging in vigorous discussion at Faith In The Questions as part of the York Festival Of Ideas.

We’ve partnered with Scientists in Congregations, to tour a number of Faith In The Questions events, the first of which are taking place in York from June 8 to June 10 at St Michael le Belfrey church. The evening starts at 7.30pm and is free.

The evening begins with Counting The Clouds, an inventive new one-act play by Nigel Forde. It will grapple with the scientific and personal challenges which arise from the debate surrounding belief and scientific enquiry. In the Q&A session that follows, audience members will be invited to raise their own questions.

Counting the Clouds has been written for the evening by poet, playwright and long-standing Riding Lights collaborator Nigel Forde. The play the biblical figure of Job as a modern-day scientist. Job wrestles with the unpredictable structure of the universe, asking if God could possibly be in control?

Or is that even a reasonable question to ask? When Job’s personal world is shaken to the core, how can he reconcile the pieces of the puzzle that emerges?

Tom McLeish is Professor of Physics at Durham University and also chairs the Royal Society’s Education Committee. He has won several awards both in Europe and the US for his work on molecular rheology of polymers. Professor Stephen Smye is a specialty cluster lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network based at King’s College London.

YOUTH THEATRE DIRECTOR & EDUCATION PRACTITIONER

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Youth Theatre Director & Education Practitioner to join the Education Department at Riding Lights.

The Riding Lights Youth Theatre has been established in three groups drawn from the academic years 7-9 and 10-13 as well as a youth theatre for those aged 13-18 with additional needs or disabilities, called ‘Acting Up!’ These groups meet on separate evenings each week in term time, working on a range of projects based around acquiring theatre skills and presenting performances.

Riding Lights also provides regular school drama teaching (academic years 3 – 8).

Closing date for applications is Monday 14 November and interviews will take place in the week beginning Monday 28 November.
The successful candidate will join the company in early January.

Join 5 professional actors and a theatre director for a whole day of drama! Come to Friargate Theatre and play some games, learn some acting and devising skills and create some drama from scratch.
