Riding Lights moved into its first permanent home, Friargate Theatre in the heart of York, in 1999. It opened to the public in May 2000 with the company’s production of Ben Jonson’s classic satire, The Alchemist.
The building features a 100-seat studio theatre on the first floor, a ground-floor rehearsal room which doubles as a 50-seat cafe-style performance space, administration and workshop space.
Not only is Friargate Theatre a space for Riding Lights to rehearse and perform its own work, it also houses the company’s four Youth Theatre groups for young people under the age of 18. It is a base from which Riding Lights offers many educational projects for various groups, and has a busy programme of theatre, music, comedy and literature events by companies from across the region and nationwide.
